Bottling Beverages From Juice to Ginger Beer and Everything in Between
Here at Idyll we produce and package a range of juice-based products, as well as Ginger Beer and read-to-drink spirit products. Bottling beverages is a complex process that includes crushing fruit, fermenting, perfecting the recipe and packaging into the desired packaging format. Idyll are experts in bottle beverages including wine, cider, rtd’s and ginger beer.
The technology utilised to produce wine, seltzer, ready-to-drink products and Ginger Beer are very similar. However brewing beer is completely different which is why it is incredibly uncommon to see dual beer and winemaking operations. The large difference comes from the chemical makeup of the raw ingredients needed to produce the desired product.
The way sugar ferments to make alcohol from fruits such as grapes, apples, or pears compared to the way grains (wheat, barley etc) are fermented to produce alcohol is completely different. Many believe that over time, crushed fruits would ferment on their own and become alcoholic due to the natural sugars in the fruits. However, transforming carbohydrates to make sugars to then transform into alcoholic beer is a completely different process. Many Ginger Beers actually have a cider base, which is why they’re often produced by winemakers as opposed to brewers.
Once the liquid has been produced, bottling beverages is the same process for each brew. Packaging lines are set up to suit the desired bottle shape and size, the liquid is brought in from tank to the packaging line (at Idyll we use a pigging system that brings the liquid in from our outdoor tank farm directly into the packaging line).
Bottles are cleaned, sterilised, filled, sealed, washed, labelled, packaged into boxes before being stacked onto the pallet. Bottling beverages, no matter the liquid is a consistent process. The real difference between products comes from the fermenting and taste creation stage of the process.
