Celebrating 21 years with Executive Director Michael Birthisel
Michael is Idyll Wine Co’s second longest serving employee and is celebrating 21 years in the business. From being one of the first staff back in 2000 to managing a company of 127 staff alongside fellow Executive Director Andrew Byers, we caught up with Michael to reflect on his past 21 years.
How does it make you feel reflecting on 21 years with Idyll Wine Co?
Michael: It’s a really good opportunity to reflect on the last 21 years. I have a wonderful feeling of pride about the growth of the business but it also makes me wonder where all the time went. The business has changed a lot over this time and continues to meet the challenges and changes that are required to be successful.
What was your first role at this company?
Michael: I started initially as the Finance Manager after growing tired of the daily commute to work in Melbourne. In time I became the General Manager and five years ago I become one of two Executive Directors at Idyll Wine Co.
What key achievement comes to mind when reflecting on the past two-and-a-bit decades?
Michael: When I started in 2000, we produced 350,000 bottles. In the next financial year we expect to package 40 million bottles and 20 million cans. That growth is monumental and the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of good people.
What are you most proud of in your 21 years?
Michael: I am proud of the impact I have had in growing this business to the size it is now. In the past 5 years particularly, my business partner Andrew and I have worked diligently together to accelerate the success of the business. Whilst our skill sets are different, the mutual respect and admiration we have for one another compliments our drive for success.
What is your favourite thing about working at Idyll Wine Co?
Michael: There are countless staff, many of whom have been with us for over 10 years, who have been vital to our success. The staff here enjoy working together, having fun and achieving our goals. We thrive on being a family business with family values.
What is your ultimate goal within the company?
Michael: Our aspiration is to be the best at what we do. We are all constantly striving to make our business better in every area.
