Idyll Wine Co achieved leading positions by total revenue (14th) and total wine production (15th) among 2268 producers in the country despite intensifying industry competition, such as a 2 per cent increase in the number of wine producers in Australia in 2021.
Underpinning the robust business growth are combined factors of portfolio diversification and a series of sustainability initiatives. “Our strategy is clear. We strive to build an environmentally sustainable, healthy, profitable business that rewards its employees, respects its environment, and contributes to its community,” said Andrew.

“We have traditionally been a wine producer, in 2015 we were exclusively putting wine through here. And over the last five years we have really worked to diversify the products that we’re taking to market so that’s included ciders and then RTDs brands, and then branched out again into seltzers and those sorts of products as well.” Executive Director, Andrew Byers.
“What we’ve been able to do is really get away from one segment of the market and actually broaden what we can do and what markets we can target, which has allowed us to grow. COVID had a big impact on us but the China tariffs are probably just as large an impact as well on a wine business.

With sustainability central to its business strategy, the drinks manufacturer has adopted a suite of large-scale and long-term sustainable practices throughout beverage production cycles, such as investing in renewable energy and optimising waste management.
Water management is another key aspect of sustainability. Not only does the drinks manufacturer maintain a large water dam at its winery in the Geelong Wine Region, it also efficiently irrigates with recycled dam water, and follows water conservation practices, including mulching.
As a result, 26 million litres of water was recycled in the onsite dam in 2020 and repurposed for other activities, such as irrigation, which accounted for over 80% of the total water usage by the company for the year.

There is a lot to get one’s head around when considering this ‘behind the scenes’ business. The founders have a huge vision, a pragmatic and innovative mindset and an addiction to maintaining control and ownership of the entire production process whether producing beer, wine, cider or seltzer.
In 2017, the business diversified away from wine, producing its own cider, establishing a state of the art packaging facility, and managing distribution and logistics. They installed a bottling facility on site and a fermentation cellar. So today, Idyll Wine can bottle, ferment, store and blend from their Moorabool site.
“We are control and QA freaks. We like to have complete control of the process,” says Byers.
Byers says that the two founders share a vision and “have a supportive board that allows us to do crazy things”.
