Cider keg line design and functionality: Why a proper set up is important
A proper keg line design is imperative to ensure the environment and product are sterile as the line is packaging a consumable product.
Many elements of a keg line design are focused on cleaning and sterilising the keg, especially because most kegs are reused and not brand new (like bottles and cans are). Whilst this is more sustainable than bottle or can alternatives, it does place a strong emphasis on adequate cleaning and sterilisation practices.
The first stage of most keg lines is to sanitise and clean the outside of the keg. Most kegging lines then contain 4 key ‘heads’ or elements of the machine. The first ‘head’ of a line empties the remaining contents of the kegs, ensures the pressure is adequate and then citric cleans the inside of the keg. The second head cleans the inside of the keg. The third steam sterilises the inside and the fourth head fills the keg with the desired product.
A proper keg line design is also important to ensure health and safety practices are adhered to for staff operating the line. Whilst empty kegs are rather light to pick up and place on the line, filled kegs are incredibly heavy.
An automatic pack off machine is vital to ensure staff are not expected to lift full kegs onto a pallet ready for despatch. Its an employers obligation to provide a safe work environment and is another important reason why a proper keg line design and setup is imperative.
A proper keg line design and setup with filters and adequate sterilisation ensures that the product the keg is filled with remains at the quality level it was at before it was packaged into a keg. Without all these essential steps product quality is negatively impacted. Bacteria that can be found on improperly cleaned kegs can diminish the quality of the product and lead to potential harm to the consumer. This could damage brand reputation and consumer loyalty.
