Manufacturing of Wine: How to Simplify

As a full scale beverage manufacturing company, we have all the technology available and know all the industry lingo to explain the technical processes of wine manufacturing. However, the manufacturing of wine process can be simplified.

Creating wine products:

Essentially we start with grapes. We crush these and extract the juice of the grapes. The grape skins are used to generate the colour of the grapes.

Arguably the most important step in the manufacturing of wine is the fermentation process. Fermentation turns the natural sugar in the grapes into alcohol. Controlling the flavours during this process is vital to the quality of the end product.

The next step in the manufacturing of wine process is getting the finished product ready for bottling. Here at Idyll all our wines go through cross-flow filtration which removes any small particles from the wine. Then the product is moved to its final tank ready for bottling.

Packaging finished wine products:

The next step in the manufacturing of wine is to bottle the product. After the bottles are loaded onto the bottling line, they are cleaned and sterilised before heading to the filler to be filled with the wine product. Then the required cap is applied to the product. Depending on the closure fitting, the process can vary slightly.

Corks: Corks are inserted into the bottle before a PVC cap is applied to present the bottle in a nicer manner

Sparkling corks: the sparkling cork is inserted, then a muselet is applied to ensure the pressure of the bottle doesn’t dislodge the cork. For aesthetic purposes, a hood is applied to enhance the bottle presentation.

Screwcap: A screwcap is applied to the bottle and pressure is applied to make a seal that enables the cap to be broken and opened.

Next up is the wine labeller which attaches a front and back label to the bottle. Neck labels can also be attached here if required. There can be restrictions and requirements around some of the information that label must contain. Finally, bottles are placed into cartons and are sealed, before being loaded onto a pallet ready for transport.

The manufacturing of wine and ensuring each stage is completed to the highest quality standards is a complex process. These steps are a brief summary into the stages every wine product at Idyll follows before being consumed domestically and internationally.
